Gangnam is not a single administrative unit but a cluster of districts and neighbourhoods. Prominent areas include:

• Gangnam-gu (Gangnam District), a central business and residential zone
• Seocho-gu and Songpa-gu, neighbouring districts with major cultural and civic functions
• Upmarket neighbourhoods such as Apgujeong, Cheongdam and Sinsa, known for boutiques and nightlife

History and development

Until the mid-20th century much of the southern riverbank was agricultural and less developed than the older northern parts of Seoul. Rapid urbanization and government-led planning from the late 20th century transformed Gangnam into a dense, planned metropolitan area with offices, shopping centres and apartment towers. Infrastructure investments—roads, bridges and subway lines—helped integrate Gangnam with the rest of the city and attract businesses and residents.

Culture, economy and reputation

Gangnam functions as an economic and cultural hub. It hosts corporate headquarters, high-end retail, entertainment venues and a concentration of private educational institutions and clinics. The area is widely associated with high property values, consumer trends and a conspicuous consumption lifestyle. That reputation is sometimes discussed critically in South Korean media and social commentary as reflecting social inequality and status competition.

Notable facts and distinctions

Internationally the term Gangnam gained extra recognition through popular culture, most famously the 2012 global hit that satirized its image. The district is also known for heavy commuter traffic, a busy subway node around Gangnam Station, and numerous cultural events. While often used metonymically to mean 'wealthy Seoul,' Gangnam is a diverse urban area with residential, commercial and civic functions that continue to shape Seoul's modern identity.
