Geography and administration

Gagra is the administrative centre of the Gagra District and sits on a narrow coastal plain backed by steep hills. To the north the Psou River marks the boundary with neighboring Russian territory; the adjacent Russian region is the Krasnodar Krai. The town combines pebble and sandy beaches, a seafront promenade, and nearby mountain slopes, offering easy access to coastal and upland landscapes.

History and development

The site of Gagra has a long human presence, with archaeological and historical traces of medieval and later settlements. It began its modern development as a seaside resort during the late 19th and early 20th centuries under Russian administration, expanding substantially in the Soviet period when sanatoria and holiday facilities were built. The town experienced significant disruption during the early 1990s due to armed conflict in the region, after which reconstruction and changes in visitor patterns followed.
