Landscape and ecology

The island contains a mosaic of heathland, eucalypt woodland, wetlands and coastal ecosystems. Large areas are free from intensive development, providing habitat for diverse birdlife, reptiles and mammals. Notably, French Island hosts a healthy population of koalas that are free from the chlamydia infection common on the mainland, making them an important focus for conservation and research. Saltmarshes and mangrove communities fringe the shoreline, and the shallow waters of Western Port support seagrass meadows and marine fauna.

In recognition of its ecological value, a large portion of the island was designated as a national park in the late 20th century, and sections of adjacent coastal waters have later been declared a marine national park. Despite being accessible from the mainland by ferry, French Island has limited public utilities: there is no reticulated town water, electricity grid or permanent medical centre. Basic services are provided from a small shop and post office near Tankerton Jetty, and accommodation options include camping, private guesthouses and small-scale eco-accommodation. Visitors commonly arrive by the vehicle ferry or private boats and should plan for limited on-island services.

History and use

European use of the island has included grazing and small-scale farming, but much of the land has been left in a near-natural state compared with heavily developed coastal areas. The island's European name reflects early nineteenth-century exploration and interest in the region, though its ecological values have become the overriding influence on land management in recent decades. A number of historic buildings and adaptive re-use projects exist, including community-run enterprises operating in former institutional buildings.

Visiting and significance

French Island is valued for wildlife viewing, quiet recreation and as an example of coastal ecosystems that remain largely intact near a major metropolitan area. Visitors are advised to respect park regulations, carry provisions and make bookings where required.
