Eucalyptus regnans (Mountain ash)

Appearance and size

E. regnans can reach extraordinary heights, with mature trees sometimes exceeding 100 m and commonly referenced in imperial measures as over 328 ft. It produces a straight, tall trunk, smooth bark that peels in strips, lance-shaped evergreen leaves, clusters of white flowers and woody capsule fruits that contain numerous small seeds.

Ecology and life history

This species thrives in high-rainfall, cool environments and often forms single-species stands known as mountain ash forests. It is a fast-growing tree that regenerates primarily from seed; populations are adapted to a fire regime in which canopy seed release and post-fire seedling recruitment are important. Because it does not reliably resprout from a lignotuber, intense or frequent fires and post-fire logging can limit regeneration.

Uses and economic importance

Timber from E. regnans is prized for construction, furniture, veneers and pulp. In Tasmania its wood is marketed as Tasmanian oak when mixed with related species. Its straight boles and workable timber have made it commercially significant, but large-scale harvesting has raised concerns about sustainability and loss of old-growth habitats.

Old-growth mountain ash forests are ecologically important for carbon storage and wildlife habitat, including specialized birds and mammals. Conservation efforts focus on protecting remnant stands, managing fire and balancing timber use with regeneration needs.
