Etiquette (from French étiquette), also called rules of etiquette, is a set of rules of behavior based on contemporary traditional norms that describe expectations of social behavior within certain social circles.

The word is often equated or associated with the terms: Ceremonial, diplomatic protocol and manners. However, the equation with manners is problematic. Etiquette basically only refers to manners that are only presented for the sake of official formality.

Word Origin

The word "etiquette" originally comes from "etiquettes": at the French royal court, notes were used on which the order of precedence of the persons admitted to the court was written down, so the term "etiquette" refers to behaving "decently" according to the rules of the court. Such methods were widespread in the 18th and 19th centuries and can be found in the custom of the obligatory written invitation as well as in the ball booklet (Ballbuch), in which one announces oneself to the lady at the ball for the dance.

Authors of books on etiquette

The most successful author of etiquette books in the post-war period was Erica Pappritz (1893-1972). The diplomat had built up official protocol under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer in Bonn's Foreign Office. Adenauer had made Hans Herwarth von Bittenfeld, who had experience in the diplomatic service of the Foreign Office in Berlin, head of protocol, and his colleague Erica Pappritz vice-head of protocol and his personal advisor. The principles she established remained elements of diplomatic training. While still in office as the Federal Republic's official lady of protocol, she wrote the "Book of Etiquette", which became a bestseller in its first edition.
