Enlightenment (window manager)

Design and architecture

Enlightenment follows a modular design. The window manager itself handles window placement, focus and compositing, while supplementary components and libraries provide widgets, theming and rendering features. Many parts are grouped under the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL), a set of reusable libraries that supply graphics, container widgets and utility routines. This separation lets developers use EFL independently from the desktop shell.

Over time it produced not just the window manager but also the EFL toolset used by other projects and devices. The codebase has evolved to support modern features, and ports or integrations have been developed to work alongside other desktop components.

Uses and integration

Enlightenment can be used as a standalone desktop shell or together with components from larger desktop environments. It is often chosen by users who want a visually appealing yet lightweight desktop, or by distributions targeting older machines and embedded systems. Because of its modular libraries, other software projects have adopted parts of the Enlightenment ecosystem for their own graphical stacks. Distinctions and notable facts

Enlightenment differs from full desktop environments such as GNOME or KDE in that it is primarily a window manager and toolkit provider rather than a monolithic desktop suite; nevertheless, it offers many desktop-like functions and can interoperate with other environments (GNOME, KDE). Its combination of eye-candy, modularity and a comparatively small footprint makes it distinct among Unix-like system window managers.
