Life and early career

Leonard was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in October 1925 and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Detroit and began his writing career with westerns before turning to crime fiction in the 1960s and 1970s. Leonard married three times; his first marriage produced five children and ended in divorce. He spent his later years in suburban Michigan, often writing about characters rooted in American cities and small towns.

Leonard's prose is notable for its minimalism: he favored short sentences, avoided unnecessary description and emphasized dialogue that reveals character and advances plot.
