Elaphrosaurus: a slender Late Jurassic ceratosaurian theropod

Elaphrosaurus was a lightly built, long-legged theropod from the Upper Jurassic Tendaguru fauna. Known from a nearly complete postcranial skeleton, its skull is missing and its affinities shifted to Ceratosauria.

Elaphrosaurus was a lightly built, long-legged theropod that lived in the Late Jurassic, about 150 million years ago. The best-known species, Elaphrosaurus bambergi, is represented by a nearly complete postcranial skeleton recovered from the Tendaguru deposits of what is now Tanzania. The animal is commonly reconstructed as a gracile runner roughly 4–5 metres (about 15 feet) long and relatively low in mass for its length. Physical characteristics

Elaphrosaurus combined a slender torso, long tail and elongate hindlimbs that point to a cursorial lifestyle. The limbs and pelvis show adaptations for running: proportionally long metatarsals, reduced robustness of some limb bones and a lightweight vertebral column. Candidates for prey include small ornithopods and other nimble vertebrates; authors sometimes mention small ornithopods such as Dryosaurus as plausible targets. Alternative diets, including small vertebrates, invertebrates or omnivory, have been considered because cranial evidence is absent.

Geographic distribution and fossil record

The holotype comes from the Tendaguru Formation (Tendaguru Formation), one of the most productive Late Jurassic sites. Fragmentary material with similar postcranial anatomy has also been reported from the Morrison Formation of North America (Morrison Formation), in strata deposited during the Upper Jurassic. These North American remains, recovered in the western United States, are tentatively compared to Elaphrosaurus but remain debated; if confirmed, they would imply a wider geographic distribution for this type of ceratosaurian in the Late Jurassic. The exact fossil age and correlations between formations complicate such biogeographic interpretations and require careful stratigraphic and anatomical study.

Elaphrosaurus illustrates how well-preserved postcranial material can inform locomotion, while the missing skull preserves key uncertainties about feeding ecology and precise relationships.
