The project was created during Lovato's early career with input from several collaborators. Songwriting and production duties included work with the Jonas Brothers and producer John Fields, among others, resulting in a polished pop-rock sound aimed at a young audience while touching on more mature topics than typical Disney-era releases. The album's release followed Lovato's growing visibility on television and radio.
Music, style and themes
Musically, the album combines upbeat guitar-driven tracks and midtempo ballads. Lyrical themes explore self-assertion, young love, and the pressures of growing up in the public eye. Vocally, it showcases Lovato's strong, emotive delivery and a pop-rock arrangement that appealed to fans of late-2000s teen pop and rock crossover acts.
Singles and promotion
- "Get Back" — an energetic pop-rock lead single used to introduce Lovato's sound to pop radio and video outlets.
- "La La Land" — a single that comments on celebrity culture and staying true to oneself.
- "Don't Forget" — the title track, often noted for its personal lyrics and anthemic chorus.
Promotion included music videos, live performances and appearances that targeted a teen and family audience, helping the album reach a wide listener base and supporting Lovato's early touring activities.
Reception and legacy
Critics and listeners received the album as a solid pop-rock debut that emphasized Lovato's vocal talent and potential. While opinions varied on songwriting maturity, the record successfully launched her recording career and set the stage for later, more personally varied albums. It remains a reference point for discussions of pop artists moving from television to music careers.

Background
In the summer of 2007, Lovato auditioned for a role on the series Sonny Munroe (then called Mollywood) and for Camp Rock on the same day. For the Camp Rock audition, Disney's chairman of entertainment, Gary Marsh, asked Lovato to audition. The song sung was Christina Aguilera's Ain't No Other Man. Bob Cavallo, vice president of record label Hollywood Records, which is part of Disney Music Group, later said their jaws "dropped". Lovato then first signed a record deal with the Hollywood Records label in early 2008 and began working on her own debut album with the Jonas Brothers shortly after. At the time, she was just 15 years old.
Origin
Shortly after Lovato signed a record deal in the spring of 2008, the Jonas Brothers began working on songs for the album. They wrote the first songs while filming the TV movie Camp Rock. During the Jonas Brothers' When You Look Me in the Eyes Tour, they then wrote 10 songs together in one week.
Here's what Lovato had to say about the writing process with the Jonas Brothers:
"I wrote (the album) with them and they helped me. They obviously knew the situation, and then we'd go on the bus at night - the songs would just pour out."
- Excerpted from an interview with Victoria Advocate.com:
"I wrote it with them and they helped me. They obviously knew the situation, and then we got on the bus one night - songs just started pouring out."
Then, before traveling to Europe to open for Avril Lavigne's The-Best-Damn-Thing-Tour, the band went into the studio with Lovato and John Fields, where they recorded the songs they had written. The album took only ten and a half days to record.
