Donkey Kong 3 is an arcade video game released by Nintendo in 1984. It is the third entry in the original Donkey Kong arcade series. Unlike the platforming format of the first two games, the player defends a greenhouse from Donkey Kong and hostile insects. A home conversion appeared for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986. Years later the game was reissued on the Wii Virtual Console, arriving in North America in 2008 and in Europe in 2009.

Gameplay

Players take the role of a pesticide specialist whose job is to protect plants from Donkey Kong and various insect enemies. Instead of jumping over obstacles, the character uses a chemical sprayer to push Donkey Kong upward along vines and to eliminate smaller foes. Each stage increases in speed and enemy variety, and players earn points by defeating insects and forcing Donkey Kong to the top of the screen.

  • Controls focus on movement and firing the sprayer rather than platforming jumps.
  • Stages change layout and difficulty as the game progresses.
  • Bonus opportunities appear between or during rounds for extra points.

Release history

Originally distributed as an arcade cabinet in 1984, the title reached home consoles with the 1986 Nintendo Entertainment System port. It was subsequently made available through Nintendo's download service on the Wii Virtual Console, with staggered regional releases: the service received the game in North America in 2008 and later in Europe in 2009.

Reception and legacy

At the time of its release, Donkey Kong 3 was noted for departing from the series' earlier platforming formula. Critics and players reacted in mixed ways: some appreciated the fresh mechanics and arcade challenge, while others preferred the action of the original titles. The game remains a distinct entry in Nintendo's early arcade catalogue and is often discussed in retrospectives covering the evolution of the Donkey Kong series.
