The Division of Robertson is an Australian federal electoral division located on the Central Coast in the state state of New South Wales. Established for the first federal election in 1901, it is one of the original 75 divisions created at the founding of the Commonwealth. The division takes its name from Sir John Robertson, a nineteenth‑century politician who served several terms as Premier of New South Wales.
Geography and communities
The electorate stretches along the Tasman Sea coast north of the Hawkesbury River and covers a mixture of seaside towns, suburban centres and hinterland areas. Major population centres commonly associated with the division include Gosford, Woy Woy and Terrigal, together with other communities such as Umina Beach, Avoca Beach and Kincumber. Its coastal setting gives the division a strong connection to tourism, beaches and estuaries.
Characteristics and economy
Robertson contains a blend of residential suburbs, retail and service precincts, light industry and recreational coastline. Many residents commute to larger employment centres, including Sydney, while local economic activity is supported by tourism, hospitality, health and small business services. The electorate’s mix of permanent residents, retirees and holiday‑home owners shapes local priorities and public services.
History and political context
As an original division of the Australian House of Representatives, Robertson has seen its boundaries altered repeatedly through redistribution processes that reflect population change. These redistributions are conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission to keep elector numbers reasonably even across divisions. Over time the seat’s demographic shifts have influenced its electoral profile and the issues prominent in campaign periods.
Administration and representation
The division elects a single member to the House of Representatives under Australia’s federal system. Electoral rolls, polling places and boundary adjustments are managed under national electoral law and overseen administratively by the electoral authority. Local concerns in Robertson often focus on coastal management, transport links to larger cities, health services and environmental conservation of coastal and estuarine areas.
