Menzies covers a collection of established suburbs and semi-rural pockets on the outskirts of metropolitan Melbourne. Its boundaries have moved periodically in response to redistributions carried out by the Australian Electoral Commission, a process intended to keep elector numbers balanced across divisions.

History and name

Established at a redistribution in 1984, the division was named in honour of Sir Robert Menzies, who was Australia's longest-serving prime minister and instrumental in forming the Liberal Party. The name reflects the common practice of naming federal divisions after prominent Australians. Redistributions since creation have adjusted its extent to reflect population change.

Political profile and significance

Menzies has generally been represented by centre-right parties at federal level and is regarded as a relatively safe seat for those groups.
