Overview

The Division of Kennedy is an Australian federal electoral division in the state of Queensland. Created for the first federal election in 1901, it is named after 19th‑century explorer Edmund Kennedy, who led expeditions in northern Queensland. The division is administered and periodically redistributed by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) as part of the country's system of single‑member electorates for the House of Representatives.

Geography and towns

Kennedy covers a very large and geographically diverse portion of northern and inland Queensland, ranging from coastal lowlands and river plains to semi‑arid interior regions. It includes many regional and remote settlements, reflecting the mixture of coastal, agricultural and outback landscapes within its boundaries.

Economy and communities

The electorate encompasses a broad mix of local economies. Mining and mineral extraction are important in parts of the interior, while agriculture — including cattle grazing and sugar production — supports many coastal and tableland towns. Tourism, particularly to natural attractions and outback destinations, also contributes to local livelihoods. Kennedy contains Indigenous communities and towns with diverse cultural and economic profiles, and representatives often focus on issues related to service delivery, infrastructure and rural industries.

Political representation and boundaries

Kennedy is a single‑member seat in the House of Representatives. Like all federal divisions, its boundaries are subject to periodic review and redistribution to reflect population changes and to maintain relatively equal numbers of electors. The large geographic scale of the division can pose challenges for effective representation and access to federal services for remote communities.

History and notable facts

As one of the original 75 divisions established at federation, Kennedy has a long parliamentary history tied to the settlement and economic development of northern Queensland. Its name commemorates Edmund Kennedy, a figure associated with early exploration in the region. The division is notable for its size and the diversity of landscapes and towns it contains, making it one of Australia's more geographically extensive federal electorates.
