The Division of Hughes is an Australian federal electoral division in the state of New South Wales. Created in 1955, it elects one member to the House of Representatives. The division takes its name from William Morris "Billy" Hughes, who served as Prime Minister of Australia in the early 20th century; background on the office can be found via Prime Minister of Australia resources.
Location and boundaries
Located in the southern and south-western suburbs of metropolitan Sydney, Hughes combines residential suburbs with pockets of industry, defence and scientific infrastructure. Like other federal divisions, its exact limits are adjusted from time to time by the Australian Electoral Commission to reflect population change; information about the electoral division framework is available from Electoral Division material.
Suburbs and local features
The electorate includes a number of established suburbs and parts of larger suburbs. Typical communities listed in the division include:
- Alfords Point, Bangor, Barden Ridge, Chipping Norton
- East Hills, Engadine, Hammondville, Holsworthy
- Illawong, Loftus, Lucas Heights, Menai
- Milperra, Moorebank, Panania, Picnic Point, Revesby
- Warwick Farm, Wattle Grove, Woronora and portions of Padstow, Jannali, Liverpool and Sutherland
Several of these suburbs contain notable facilities: Lucas Heights is home to Australia's major nuclear research facility, and Holsworthy contains significant Australian Defence Force installations. Other parts of the division combine older residential streets with newer housing developments and light industrial zones.
History and political character
Since its creation in the mid-20th century the Division of Hughes has reflected the changing face of suburban Sydney. Population growth, housing change and local industry have influenced electoral outcomes. The seat has been contested by major parties and is often judged by commentators as a seat where local issues — transport, defence land use, and suburban services — matter to voters.
Electoral boundaries are subject to redistribution, so lists of suburbs can change between elections. For current maps, enrolment data and representation details consult the Australian Electoral Commission or official division pages.
Notable points: the division is named for Billy Hughes; it sits within the greater Sydney metropolitan area; and it contains a mix of residential neighbourhoods, government and research installations, and industrial precincts.
