Overview

The Division of Capricornia is an Australian federal electorate in the state of Queensland. It was established for the first national election in 1901 as one of the original 75 divisions and takes its name from the nearby Tropic of Capricorn, which crosses the region. Administratively it is classified as a House of Representatives division and encloses a mix of coastal urban centres and inland rural districts.

Geography and communities

At its core is the city of Rockhampton on the central Queensland coast, and the electorate extends into surrounding hinterland and islands. Principal population centres include:

  • Rockhampton — the region's largest urban centre and a service hub
  • Yeppoon — coastal town and gateway to nearby islands
  • Mount Morgan — historic mining town in the interior
  • Great Keppel Island — a notable tourism and conservation area

The division combines shoreline, river systems and inland grazing and former mining districts, producing a varied economic and social landscape.

History and boundary changes

Since its creation in 1901 the Division of Capricornia has undergone numerous redistributions that have altered its size and shape to reflect population change. These redistributions affect which towns and rural areas are included at any given time, and they are carried out by the Australian Electoral Commission. The electorate's name reflects a prominent geographic reference rather than a single municipality.

Political profile and significance

Capricornia has historically been contested by the major federal parties and has at times been a marginal seat. Its mix of urban workers, rural producers and resource-industry employees means local campaigns often focus on infrastructure, health services, agricultural policy, and resource management. Representatives from Capricornia have participated in national debates on regional development and coastal management.

Economy and notable features

The economy within the division is diverse: grazing and cropping in inland areas, mining and former goldfields around towns such as Mount Morgan, and tourism linked to beaches and islands near Yeppoon and Great Keppel Island. Environmental and coastal issues are important locally because of reef, island and estuarine ecosystems. For further administrative details see the Australian Electoral Division entry on Capricornia.
