Diamantina River is an inland watercourse located in the Central West region of Queensland, Australia. It was identified and named during 19th‑century exploration, and remains one of the notable rivers within that part of the state.

Name and history

The name was given in 1866 by explorer William Landsborough. He chose the name to honour Lady Diamantina Bowen (born Roma), who was married to Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the first Governor of Queensland.

Tributaries

The Diamantina receives water from three principal tributaries. These are:

  • Western River
  • Mayne River
  • Farrars Creek

These feeder channels contribute to the river’s flow at different times of the year, depending on seasonal rainfall patterns across the region.
