Overview
The Devon Rex is a distinctive domestic cat breed first identified in Devon, England in the late 1950s. Recognizable for its large ears, short wavy or curly coat and slender build, the breed is prized for an engaging, people-oriented personality and a striking, pixie-like face. For more on breed standards and history see Devon Rex resources.
Appearance and characteristics
Devon Rex cats are small to medium in size, typically lightweight and agile. Their most notable physical features include an angular head, large low-set ears, high cheekbones and large eyes. The coat is unusually fine, soft and often described as curly, rippled or wavy rather than the straight hair of many other breeds.
Coat, grooming and care
The Devon's coat requires gentler grooming than long-haired breeds: light brushing or stroking preserves the curl and distributes skin oils. Despite a short coat and lower visible shedding, the breed is not truly hypoallergenic; people sensitive to cat allergens may still react. Because their coat is thin, Devons can be more sensitive to cold and sun, so indoor living or warm bedding is often recommended.
Temperament and suitability
Devon Rexes are widely described as playful, intelligent and affectionate. They often seek human companionship, enjoy interactive play and adapt well to homes with other pets. Their curiosity and energy make them entertaining companions; they can be active climbers and like to be involved in household activity.
Health and lifespan
Like all breeds, the Devon Rex has some breed-associated health issues and benefits from routine veterinary care, vaccination and dental hygiene. Many individuals live into their teens when cared for properly. Prospective owners should obtain cats from reputable breeders who screen for known hereditary conditions and can provide health histories.
Origins and distinction from similar breeds
The first recorded Devon Rex kitten was found in Buckfastleigh, Devon in 1959, and the foundation cats were developed into a breed in Britain. Although the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex share a curly appearance, they are distinct breeds with different coat textures and body types. The Devon's coat and facial appearance give it a unique look and temperament profile compared with other rex-type breeds.
