Daya was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and developed an interest in singing and writing songs at a young age. She performed locally before moving into studio work and professional collaborations. Early attention came after demos and independent releases attracted the notice of producers and labels, paving the way for her commercial debut.
Breakthrough and career
Her debut EP, released in September 2015, introduced "Hide Away," a single that reached the upper region of the Billboard Hot 100, bringing national radio play and streaming traction. Following that success, her October 2016 album Sit Still, Look Pretty consolidated her presence as a young pop artist with radio-friendly singles and touring support. Daya has also appeared as a guest vocalist on electronic and dance tracks, broadening her audience beyond traditional pop listeners.
Recognition and notable collaborations
One of Daya's highest-profile collaborations was as the featured singer on The Chainsmokers' song "Don't Let Me Down," a dance-pop track that received major radio rotation and industry recognition. That recording was associated with a Grammy Award nomination in 2017 for Best Dance Recording, reflecting both the track's commercial impact and her role as a featured performer.
Musical style and themes
Daya's music is generally framed within pop and electropop, often incorporating electronic production and catchy melodic hooks. Lyrically, her songs touch on themes common to contemporary pop—identity, relationships, confidence and coming-of-age perspectives—delivered in a clear, youthful vocal style that has appealed to teen and young adult audiences.

Life
Grace Tandon was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up in Mt. Lebanon. She began piano lessons at a young age, followed by other instruments such as guitar and saxophone. At the age of ten, she also received vocal lessons. Later, she also performed at local events. An acquaintance of her singing teacher brought her to the Z-Entertainment label, where she signed a recording contract at the age of 16. Her grandfather is from India and while searching for a stage name, she came across the translation Daya in Hindi of her given name Grace, which means "grace". Her first release under that name was Hide Away. She began as a local radio success in the spring of 2015, and found much success online, including support from bloggers like Perez Hilton. She began U.S. wide promotion and in the fall the EP Daya was released with Hide Away and five other songs. The song alone sold over a million copies (platinum status) and reached #23 on the US singles chart. The EP reached #61 and stayed on the album charts for 48 weeks.
At the end of 2015, Daya came to the attention of US DJ duo The Chainsmokers. Together they recorded the trap track Don't Let Me Down, which reached the top 10 of the German single charts.
In 2018, the singer came out as bisexual.
