Design and key features

Rafale combines a cropped delta wing with close‑coupled canards and a relaxed static stability profile controlled by a quadruplex fly‑by‑wire system. It is powered by two low‑bypass turbofan engines and carries a modular avionics suite that integrates sensor fusion, a sophisticated electronic warfare system and modern radar options. The aircraft can be fitted with beyond‑visual‑range missiles, short‑range air‑to‑air missiles, precision guided bombs and stand‑off weapons, allowing a single airframe to conduct diverse mission sets.

Variants and roles

Development and service entry

The Rafale programme began as a response to changing requirements in the late 20th century, intended to replace several older combat types.
