Darchan (Mongolian Дархан, ᠳᠠᠷᠬᠠᠨ) is the third largest city in Mongolia and the capital of the Darchan Uul Aimag (Mongolian province). The name means "blacksmith" and was chosen to signify the intended purpose of the city.
History
The foundation stone of the city was laid on 17 October 1961. It was conceived as an industrial site to cover production for northern Mongolia within the framework of the socialist planned economy. The construction took place with massive support from the Soviet Union.
Population
76% of the Aimag's population live in the city, most of them in prefabricated buildings, the rest in yurt settlements. The proportion of inhabitants of Russian origin is higher than in other cities of Mongolia.
