Biography

Castelao grew up in a small coastal town in Galicia and trained initially in medicine and the arts before committing to public work in culture and politics. He developed a reputation early on for incisive drawings and short prose pieces that combined humor, social critique and regional feeling. After the Spanish Civil War he lived in exile and continued his activity abroad; he died in exile in Prague in 1950. His life bridged regional cultural revival and the turbulent national politics of early twentieth-century Spain.

Works and artistic style

Castelao produced a varied body of work: illustrated essays, short stories, plays and thousands of drawings and caricatures. Notable titles include the politically charged essay Sempre en Galiza, collections of short pieces and drawings such as Cousas, and the play Os vellos non deben de namorarse.
