Aardonyx — a basal sauropodomorph from the Early Jurassic

Description

Aardonyx combines several anatomical features typical of early sauropodomorphs: an elongated neck of multiple vertebrae, slender forelimbs and hindlimbs, and a barrel-shaped chest. The skull was relatively small and the dentition adapted for an herbivorous diet, with leaf-shaped teeth suited for processing plant material. Limb proportions and joint structure suggest it habitually walked on two legs but could adopt a more horizontal trunk and use the forelimbs when feeding or moving slowly.

Discovery and classification

The genus was described from South African fossil beds and is placed among basal sauropodomorphs, a group that gave rise to the giant, fully quadrupedal sauropods of later Mesozoic times.
