The municipality includes an urban centre and several populated places and neighborhoods, including Souvret, which appears in local addresses and signage. Governance follows the Belgian municipal model with a mayor and council responsible for local services such as schools, public works and cultural programming. Local identity is expressed through parish churches, the town hall and small public squares.
History and development
Courcelles grew as part of the Charleroi industrial area that developed from the 19th century onward. The local economy was long dominated by coal mining, metallurgy and related industries common to the so-called Charleroi basin. Over the later 20th century those heavy industries contracted, prompting economic restructuring and reuse of former industrial sites.
Economy and daily life
Today the town combines light industry, local commerce and services. Many residents commute to jobs in Charleroi and surrounding municipalities. Municipal efforts typically focus on economic diversification, vocational training and improving public amenities to attract small businesses and improve quality of life.
