Cosmetics (commonly called makeup, make up, or make-up) are preparations applied to the skin, lips, hair or nails to change, enhance, or accentuate appearance. They are used for everyday styling, to meet cultural beauty norms, and to create character looks for performance or photography. In many regions, routine use of cosmetics is more prevalent among women, while men more often use them for stage, television and movies.
Common product groups
- Lipstick and other lip products — provide colour, gloss, or protection to the lips.
- Face powders — used to set foundation, reduce shine, or alter skin tone. Varieties include blush for adding colour to the cheeks and eyeshadow for colouring the eyelids.
- Creams, lotions and foundations — applied to even skin tone, provide coverage or moisturise.
- Mascaras, eyeliners, brow products and similar items — emphasise or reshape facial features.
Usage and properties
Most cosmetic products are intended for temporary change: they are applied and later removed, or they wear off over time and need reapplication. They differ from medical or surgical cosmetic procedures, which permanently alter body structures. Cosmetics are formulated for safety and performance, but consumers are advised to follow product instructions and patch-test new items when possible.
