Geography and characteristics

Guyane is the largest French department by area and much of its territory is dense tropical rainforest and sparsely populated interior. As a result many communes cover very large areas while containing small, scattered settlements. Coastal communes concentrate the bulk of the population and economic activity, while interior communes often include indigenous communities, Maroon villages and protected natural areas.

History and administration

Guyane became an overseas department of France in the mid-20th century, and its communes were adapted to French municipal law. Communes work alongside departmental and regional institutions, and in recent decades intercommunal cooperation structures have been used to coordinate services such as waste management, transport and development across municipal boundaries.

Prominent communes on the coast include Cayenne (the departmental capital), Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, Kourou and Matoury. Kourou hosts the Guiana Space Centre, an important European launch complex that influences local infrastructure and economy. Interior communes may be noted for biodiversity, river access, and traditional cultures rather than large urban centers.
