Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA)

Beliefs and worship

The CRCNA affirms historic Reformed theology and draws on confessional documents of the Reformed tradition. Emphases include the sovereignty of God, the authority of Scripture, covenantal relationships, and the centrality of preaching. Typical worship services include Scripture reading, preaching, prayer, congregational singing, and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper. The denomination combines confessional standards with an interest in applying Reformed convictions to contemporary life.

Governance and organization

Polity is synodical and representative. Local congregations are organized into regional classes (classis) that send delegates to a denominational synod. Elders and ministers share leadership responsibilities: ministers provide pastoral care and preaching, while elders assist in governance and discipline. Decisions about doctrine, discipline, and denominational policy are reached through this layered, collegial process that seeks to balance congregational input and wider oversight.

History and institutions

The CRCNA developed in the 19th century among Dutch settlers who sought to preserve Reformed worship, doctrine, and pastoral oversight in their new communities. Over time the denomination founded theological schools, colleges, mission agencies, and social service organizations. Institutions historically associated with the CRCNA include seminaries and colleges that train clergy and lay leaders, and mission and relief agencies that coordinate overseas mission work and disaster response.

Ministry, social engagement and contemporary matters

Local congregations engage in pastoral care, education, community outreach, and charitable work. The denomination supports overseas and domestic mission, development, and relief programs. In recent decades the CRCNA has engaged in internal conversations and synodical decisions on issues such as the ordination and role of women, pastoral practice, and human sexuality. These discussions have sometimes led to differing practices among congregations and thoughtful debate about theology, pastoral care, and church discipline.

Ecumenical relations

The CRCNA participates in ecumenical and interchurch relationships with other Reformed and Protestant bodies, and cooperates with partner churches and agencies in education, mission, and social service. Its binational character and confessional heritage shape both its internal life and public witness as a Reformed voice in North American Christianity.
