Overview

Choctaw County is a largely rural county in the U.S. state of Alabama. Created on December 29, 1847, it was named for the Choctaw people, a Native nation of the region often referred to as American Indians. According to the 2010 census the county had a population of about 13,859. The administrative center and largest town is the county seat, Butler.

History and origins

The area that became Choctaw County was long inhabited by Indigenous peoples, and European-American settlement accelerated in the early 19th century. The county was formed in the mid-1800s as Alabama counties were organized and named to reflect local Native American heritage. Agriculture, especially cotton in the antebellum and postbellum periods, and later timber, shaped settlement and land use patterns.

Geography and environment

Choctaw County is characterized by low rolling hills, mixed pine and hardwood forests, and waterways that support outdoor recreation and natural habitats. The county's setting favors forestry and farming over dense urban development. The climate is typical of the Gulf Coast interior with warm summers and mild winters, supporting a diversity of plant and animal life.

Economy, communities and government

The local economy is based on agriculture, forestry, small-scale manufacturing and services that support rural communities. Butler functions as the governmental and commercial hub, hosting county offices and local institutions. Like other Alabama counties, Choctaw County is governed by an elected county commission and a set of constitutional officers responsible for courts, public safety, roads and records.
