Geography and climate

Châtellerault occupies a river corridor with older streets clustered close to the Vienne and more recent suburbs spreading outward. The local climate is temperate with maritime influence, giving mild winters and warm summers typical of much of western France. History

The town developed around a river crossing and medieval market functions. From the 18th and 19th centuries Châtellerault grew as workshops and state-supported manufacturing became important locally.
