The modern municipality gained its present administrative extent in the early 21st century when neighbouring communities joined with Cevio. On 22 October 2006 the former municipalities of Bignasco and Cavergno were incorporated, enlarging Cevio and bringing additional hamlets, cultural sites and valley territory into the municipal structure. This sort of merger has been part of a wider Swiss trend to combine small municipalities for administrative efficiency.
