The Centre department is one of Haiti's administrative divisions and lies in the heart of the country. It is a landlocked region whose central location gives it its name. As an administrative unit it is one of the country's departments (departments) and is known in French as a département. The department sits within the state of Haiti and shares an international frontier; it meets the national boundary (border) with the Dominican Republic. Centre is notable for being the only Haitian department that does not touch the sea.
Characteristics and geography
Centre occupies part of Haiti's central plateau and features a mix of mountains, valleys and river basins. The terrain is generally higher than coastal areas, with variable rainfall and a tropical climate moderated by elevation. Because it is inland, transportation and trade are oriented toward overland routes rather than maritime ports.
Administration and towns
Like other departments in Haiti, Centre is subdivided into arrondissements and communes for local government and public administration. Its capital is Hinche, which serves as the main political and commercial center. Other important towns include Mirebalais and the border town Belladère, each playing roles in regional services, markets and cross-border movement.
Economy and society
The department's economy is predominantly rural and agricultural. Smallholder farms produce staples and cash crops, and livestock keeping is common. Local markets, remittances and informal trade support livelihoods. Social life is rooted in community networks and local institutions, with services concentrated in larger towns.
History, environment and challenges
Centre's history is tied to Haiti's national story of independence and territorial organization. Environmentally, the department faces issues shared by much of inland Haiti, including deforestation, soil erosion and pressure on water resources, which affect agricultural productivity. Infrastructure and access to services remain uneven, so development efforts often focus on roads, health and sustainable land management.
