Overview
The Catalonia national football team (in Spanish Selección de fútbol de Cataluña and in Catalan Selecció de futbol de Catalunya) represents the autonomous community of Catalonia (Catalonia) in exhibition football matches. It is organised by the Catalan Football Federation and selects players who are eligible by birth, heritage or residence. The team is commonly referred to as La Selecció or La Segadora, and it appears intermittently for friendly fixtures rather than official international competitions.
Organisation and competitive status
The Catalonia side is not a full member of UEFA or FIFA, so it does not take part in official tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championship. Matches are arranged as friendlies against national teams, regional selections and club sides. Coaches, staff and squads have varied over time; for example, Gerard López served as head coach following his appointment in 2013.
History and development
The team played its first documented fixture on 21 February 1912, facing France in one of the earliest representative matches. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries Catalonia organised occasional high-profile friendlies, often inviting prominent professional players from the region. A memorable recent fixture was played on 30 December 2013 against Cape Verde, which Catalonia won 4–1. Fixtures are scheduled irregularly and often coincide with international breaks or regional celebrations.
Players, selection and examples
Players called up to the Catalonia team are ordinarily Spanish nationals (Spanish citizens) who remain eligible to represent Spain at full international level if they choose. Over the years many high-profile professionals who played for major clubs have appeared for Catalonia in friendlies. Notable examples include:
Fixtures, opponents and examples of matches
Catalonia has arranged friendlies against a variety of opponents: established national teams, other non-FIFA regional selections, and club sides. These matches are often used to celebrate Catalan culture or mark anniversaries, and they sometimes feature current international stars who take part outside of competitive schedules. Because fixtures are unofficial, squads can be flexible and experimental.
Significance and distinctions
Beyond sport, the Catalonia team has symbolic and cultural importance for many people in the region. It is comparable to other representative teams that operate outside FIFA structures, serving both sporting and identity purposes. While it cannot compete in FIFA- or UEFA-sanctioned tournaments, the Catalonia team remains an active part of regional football life and a showcase for players connected to the area.
