Overview
The canton of Bellerive-sur-Allier is an administrative subdivision within the Allier department. It functions as an electoral district for departmental councils and as a territorial unit for coordinating certain local public services within the department in central France. Its administrative centre, or chef-lieu, is the town of Bellerive-sur-Allier.
Composition and administration
The canton groups together a number of neighbouring communes (municipalities). These communes collaborate on issues such as school transport, social services, and some infrastructure projects while retaining their municipal councils and mayors. The canton is represented at the departmental level by elected councillors who sit on the Allier departmental council.
History and creation
The current canton was formed as part of a nationwide canton reorganisation that took effect in March 2015. The reorganisation aimed to rebalance populations among cantons and modernise local electoral boundaries. The legal delimitation and the list of included communes were set by decree prior to the 2015 departmental elections.
Functions and local importance
Although cantons do not replace communes or departments, they play several practical roles: defining electoral constituencies for departmental councillors; structuring certain intercommunal cooperation efforts; and serving as reference units for statistical and administrative purposes. For residents, the canton provides a recognizable territorial layer linking small communes to departmental services.
Geography, economy and notable features
Situated in central France, the area encompassed by the canton typically combines small towns, suburban areas and rural territory. Economic activity often includes local commerce, services centred on the chief town of Bellerive-sur-Allier, and agricultural enterprises in surrounding communes. Local cultural and natural sites contribute to community life and tourism at a modest, regional scale.
