Caldas Department

The Departamento de Caldas is a department in the center of Colombia. It borders Antioquia to the north, Cundinamarca to the east, and the Departamentos de Tolima and Risaralda to the south, which also shares a border with Caldas to the west.

Coffee is the main agricultural product. Sugar cane, yuca, bananas and corn are also grown. Livestock farming is also widespread. In industry, the production of ceramics and glass and the processing of leather and wood predominate.
The department was founded on 11 April 1905, previously the area belonged to the Departamento de Antioquia. The name refers to the Colombian freedom fighter Francisco José de Caldas. In 1966, the two Departamentos de Quindío and Risaralda were separated from Caldas.
