The company was established in 2005 and began scheduled operations later that year. Early on it relied on several regional operators to fly routes to Helsinki and Stockholm and to provide occasional charter capacity. Operators that have been associated with Air Åland included Nordic Solutions (later Avion Express), the Swedish regional operator Avitrans Nordic, and NextJet among others. Air Åland also cooperated with other small carriers on multi-leg services and seasonal routes.

Routes, aircraft and services

Typical scheduled routes served under the Air Åland brand connected Mariehamn with Helsinki and Stockholm, and at times included Turku and other Finnish cities. The flights were usually operated with turboprop regional aircraft suitable for short runways and low-density routes; Saab 340-type aircraft were frequently used by the partner operators. In addition to scheduled services, the company arranged charter flights for business groups, sports teams and special events.

End of scheduled operations and legacy

From about 2012 larger regional carriers began to operate the core Helsinki–Mariehamn connection directly under their own brands, and Air Åland wound down its scheduled network.
