Ahrweiler is a Landkreis (district) in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. Its administrative seat is the spa town Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The district occupies a transitional landscape where the Ahr River has carved a narrow, steep valley into the northern slopes of the Eifel, while the Rhine forms its eastern edge.

Geography and landscape

The terrain is varied: deep river gorges, terraced vineyards on south-facing slopes, forested hills and scattered low mountains. The Ahr valley is the district's defining feature, a narrow corridor famed for its microclimate and scenic villages. Away from the valley, the Eifel's volcanic-influenced uplands rise, providing hiking terrain and mixed woodland.

Settlements and notable places

  • Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler — the district capital and historic spa town.
  • Altenahr and other villages in the Ahr valley — known for wine terraces and castle ruins.
  • Nürburg and the Nürburgring complex — a major motorsport venue near the district's western parts.
  • Remagen — located on the Rhine and important for transport links and river-front history.

Economy, wine and tourism

Viticulture is concentrated in the Ahr valley, one of Germany's northernmost red-wine areas, with Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) prominent on steep, sun-exposed slopes. Tourism combines spa facilities, wine tourism, outdoor recreation in the Eifel and motorsport events. Small and medium-sized enterprises and local services form the district's economic backbone.

History and administration

The region has long human settlement, with medieval castles, Roman traces in the Rhine valley and a development shaped by river transport and agriculture. Modern administrative structures place Ahrweiler among the rural districts of Rhineland-Palatinate; it comprises towns and Verbandsgemeinden (collective municipalities) that manage local services and planning.

Notable events and conservation

Ahrweiler's landscapes and cultural heritage draw conservation interest, while its steep vineyards require careful land management. The district suffered severe flooding in July 2021, which caused extensive damage in the Ahr valley and prompted rebuilding and flood-prevention efforts. Local festivals, wine fairs and historic sites continue to mark the area's cultural life.
