The village originated in the Viking Age. In the course of Christianisation in the 12th century, the Archbishop of Härnösand had a defence tower built in Brunflo, which together with the church is located not far from the centre of the village. The economy of the village was long dominated by the processing of limestone quarried nearby.
Prior to 2015, Brunflo had the status of an independent town with 3890 inhabitants at last count (2010), making it the second largest town in the province. Gradually merged with Östersund, Brunflo was integrated into the town of Östersund, together with Optand and Ope, which are located towards the centre.
Brunflo has a railway station on the Sundsvall-Storlien railway line and the inland railway line that branches off there towards Mora. Brunflo is situated on the European roads 45 (Inlandsvägen) and 14.
