Thomas Ongelibel Remengesau Sr. (28 November 1929 – 3 August 2019) was a prominent Palauan political figure who served as Vice President of Palau and twice assumed the duties of acting President. His periods as acting head of state came during a turbulent era for the young republic when two incumbent presidents died in office. Remengesau Sr. is remembered for helping preserve constitutional order and a peaceful transition of power.

Political career and acting presidencies

Remengesau served as Vice President of Palau from 1985 to 1988. On two separate occasions he stepped into the presidential role in an acting capacity after the unexpected deaths of sitting presidents. In 1985 the nation faced the assassination of President Haruo Remeliik; in 1988 President Lazarus Salii died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. In the aftermath of those events Remengesau assumed presidential responsibilities to ensure continuity of governance until duly elected successors could take office. He remained acting President following the 1988 incident until Ngiratkel Etpison was inaugurated in January 1989.

Context and responsibilities

Palau was establishing its institutions in the 1980s after moving toward full sovereignty. As Vice President and acting President, Remengesau Sr. performed both ceremonial duties and practical governance tasks expected of an interim chief executive: maintaining public order, overseeing daily administration, and facilitating the legal transfer of authority. His stewardship during crises helped prevent further instability and allowed time for the political process to continue.
