Stefan Savić (born 8 January 1991) is a Montenegrin professional footballer who plays principally as a centre back. Known for his physical presence and aggressive defending, Savić has built a career at club level across Serbia, England, Italy and Spain and is a regular member of the Montenegro national side. He began in local youth football before rising to the top levels of European club competition.

Early career and club progression

Savić started his football education in Montenegro with the local club Brskovo and later moved to Serbia where he played for BSK Borča. His performances attracted attention from larger clubs and he signed for FK Partizan, a leading Serbian side. While at Partizan he was part of a team that won both the national league and cup in the same season, commonly referred to as a double, which helped raise his profile on the international market.

Moves to Western Europe

In 2011 Savić transferred to Manchester City for a fee reported at around 6 million pounds. He spent one season at the club and was a squad member when they secured the Premier League title. Seeking regular first-team football, he subsequently moved to Italy where he spent three seasons with Fiorentina, consolidating his experience in a tactically demanding environment and improving his reading of the game.

Atlético Madrid and continental success

Savić joined Atlético Madrid in 2015 and became a key part of their defensive rotation. With Atlético he has won major European trophies, including the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup, and has taken part in deep runs in continental competitions. At Atlético he developed the ability to operate in systems that demand both zonal and man-marking responsibilities.

Playing style and characteristics

As a central defender Savić combines physical strength, aerial ability and a tenacious approach to tackles. He is comfortable in one-on-one duels and provides aggression and presence in the back line, often matching up against the opposition's most physical attackers. Coaches value his adaptability: he has played in back threes and back fours, showing positional discipline and improving ball-play under coaches who demand defenders contribute to build-up.

International career and significance

Savić is a long-standing member of the Montenegro national team and has been called up regularly since his early senior years. He has frequently been relied upon as one of the team's defensive leaders, contributing experience gained in top European leagues. His international role underscores his importance to Montenegrin football as one of the country's most recognizable defensive players.
