Overview

Maria Teresa Rafaela of Spain (María Teresa Antonia Rafaela; 11 June 1726 – 22 July 1746) was an Infanta of Spain who became Dauphine of France by marriage. Born into the Bourbon dynasty, she was sent to Versailles in a dynastic match intended to reinforce the Bourbon alliance linking Spain and France. At the French court she was commonly called Marie Thérèse. Her time as dauphine was short: she died as a result of complications in childbirth at age 20.

Family and early life

Maria Teresa Rafaela was the daughter of King Philip V of Spain and his second wife Elisabeth Farnese. Raised in the Spanish royal household, her upbringing followed the expectations of eighteenth‑century royal daughters: education in religion, languages, and court etiquette, together with preparation for a politically arranged marriage. As an Infanta she held a rank reflected in ceremonial precedence and dynastic responsibilities; contemporary observers saw such marriages as instruments of diplomacy rather than only private unions.

Marriage and role as Dauphine

The marriage of Maria Teresa Rafaela to Louis, the Dauphin of France, was negotiated to cement ties between the two Bourbon courts. On arrival at Versailles she assumed the formal duties of the dauphine, taking part in court ceremonies and adapting to the complex etiquette of the French court. Surviving accounts emphasise the briefness of her residence at Versailles and the challenge newcomers faced in adjusting to its social rules and politics.

Childbirth, death and issue

Maria Teresa Rafaela died on 22 July 1746 as a result of complications arising from childbirth. She bore a daughter who survived infancy but died in early childhood, leaving the dauphine with no surviving descendants. The loss altered immediate dynastic plans at the French court and had personal consequences for the Dauphin and his family during a period when securing the succession was a paramount concern.

Legacy

Although her public life was brief, Maria Teresa Rafaela is remembered in studies of mid‑eighteenth‑century dynastic politics and court life. Her marriage illustrates the use of royal brides in international diplomacy between related ruling houses, and her death underscores the high maternal risks faced by women in this era. Histories of the Bourbon families often cite her life when discussing the human dimension of dynastic alliances.
