M180 motorway (England)

Route and junctions

The motorway runs for roughly 26 miles (about 42 km). It is built predominantly to full motorway standard with dual carriageways, grade-separated junctions and limited access to local roads. At the western terminus it meets the M18 (M18 connection), while a short spur, the M181 (M181), provides a direct high‑standard link toward Scunthorpe (Scunthorpe access). Further east the M180 transitions into the A180 (A180 continuation) for traffic continuing toward the Humber estuary and the east coast.

History and development

Planning for the motorway began in the mid-20th century to improve access to the Humber ports and to serve expanding industrial areas in northern Lincolnshire. The main sections opened in 1977. Since opening the route has undergone routine upgrades, junction improvements and maintenance to accommodate changing traffic patterns and heavier freight flows.

Traffic, safety and management

Although modest in length, the M180 handles a significant proportion of regional freight traffic as well as local and long-distance journeys.
