Family background and birth

Born into the powerful House of Orléans, Louise Diane belonged to a branch of the Bourbon dynasty that played a central role during the minority of King Louis XV. Her father, Philippe d'Orléans, served as Regent of France from 1715 to 1723, governing on behalf of the young king. Her mother, Françoise Marie de Bourbon, was one of the legitimised daughters of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, giving Louise Diane both Orléans and direct Bourbon lineage.

Titles, marriage and role

As a woman of high rank at Versailles, Louise Diane's principal public role would have been dynastic: securing alliances through marriage and representing her family at court.
