Jacob G. Hornberger (born January 1, 1950) is an American lawyer, writer, and political activist. He founded and serves as president of the Future of Freedom Foundation, a public-policy organization that promotes libertarian principles. Hornberger has stood for public office and sought his party's presidential nomination on multiple occasions.

Early life and education

Hornberger was born in Laredo, Texas. Public biographies list his birthdate as January 1, 1950. He trained as an attorney and later turned to public policy work and political organizing.

Career and activism

He established the Future of Freedom Foundation and has written and lectured on topics such as individual liberty, noninterventionist foreign policy, and limited government. Hornberger's work has placed him within the wider libertarian movement, and he has been active in party politics as well as in grassroots advocacy.

Political campaigns

Hornberger has sought elected office and party nominations at several points:

  • He was a candidate for the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination in 2000.
  • In 2002 he entered the contest for the United States Senate in Virginia.
  • He launched another attempt at the Libertarian presidential nomination for 2020, filing his candidacy on October 23, 2019.

During the 2020 cycle Hornberger received strong support in several primary and online contests and accumulated a substantial number of primary votes. At the Libertarian Party national convention on May 23, 2020, however, Jo Jorgensen was selected as the party's presidential nominee after multiple rounds of delegate balloting.
