Overview

Brachylophosaurus (literally "short-crested lizard") is a genus of herbivorous, duck-billed dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous. It lived during the Campanian stage roughly 81–76.7 million years ago and belongs to the broader group of hadrosaurs, often called "duck-billed" dinosaurs. The genus is best known from multiple relatively complete specimens that preserve bones and, unusually, some soft-tissue impressions.

Anatomy and distinctive traits

As a medium-sized hadrosaur, Brachylophosaurus had the characteristic broad, flattened snout and closely packed cheek teeth (a dental battery) used to process plant material. Its skull carried a short, broad crest or bony boss at the rear that probably served in visual display and species recognition. Limbs were adapted for both bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion, with powerful hind limbs and more slender forelimbs. Several skeletons show well-preserved vertebrae and limb bones, while exceptional specimens reveal skin impressions and other soft tissues that inform reconstructions of its external appearance.

Fossil record and distribution

Fossils of Brachylophosaurus are primarily recovered from western North America. Important finds come from the Judith River Formation in Montana (Judith River) and from the Oldman Formation in Alberta (Oldman Formation), placing many specimens in what is now the northwestern United States and southern Canada. The genus is often cited in regional surveys of Late Cretaceous faunas in Canada and neighboring U.S. rock units.

Paleobiology and ecology

Brachylophosaurus was a herbivore that fed on a variety of plant materials. Its dental batteries and complex jaw mechanics allowed it to slice and grind leaves and stems. Some of the better-preserved specimens preserve stomach-region contents and skin impressions, providing direct evidence of diet and integument. Herding behavior is inferred from bonebed occurrences and comparisons with related hadrosaurs. The short cranial crest likely played a role in communication or display rather than in feeding.

Scientific importance

This genus is significant because of the relatively complete and sometimes soft-tissue-bearing remains that allow paleontologists to study growth, skin structure, and internal anatomy in detail.
