Geography and population

The county occupies a mix of rolling plains and wooded stream valleys near the Missouri border. Watercourses and a largely agricultural landscape shape land use and settlement patterns. According to the 2010 census, about 15,173 people lived in the county; population is concentrated in Fort Scott with smaller numbers in surrounding towns and rural townships.

History

Bourbon County was organized during the Kansas Territory era in the mid-19th century and was named in reference to Bourbon County, Kentucky, reflecting migration and place-naming practices of the time. The town and fort at Fort Scott developed as an Army post and later became an economic and judicial center; the community and its buildings are preserved and interpreted for visitors. For official purposes the county seat remains Fort Scott.

The local economy blends agriculture, light manufacturing, retail services and public-sector employment.
