Kaine's political trajectory moved from municipal to state to national leadership. He served as mayor of Richmond before seeking statewide office, was elected lieutenant governor, and then declared his candidacy for Governor of Virginia in 2005 to succeed Mark Warner. Kaine won the general election and completed a single four-year term. In the Democratic Party, he served as the 51st chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011.
