Facilities and collection

The gallery occupies a purpose-built space designed to accommodate a variety of exhibition formats and educational activity. Facilities include multiple galleries, a permanent collection area, and a public shop that contributes to the organisation's income. The collections focus primarily on 20th- and 21st-century work across painting, sculpture, print and installation.

Funding and governance

Construction of the gallery cost around £21 million, of which approximately £15.75 million came from the UK National Lottery. Additional capital support was provided by the European Regional Development Fund and local bodies. Ongoing running costs are met through a combination of local authority support, notably Walsall Council, grants from Arts Council England, earned income such as retail, and other project funding.

History and leadership

The New Art Gallery opened at the turn of the 21st century as a civic investment in culture and regeneration. Its first director was Peter Jenkinson. In May 2005 Stephen Snoddy was appointed director, bringing experience of curatorial programming and institution building.

Activities and public programme

Alongside temporary exhibitions, the gallery runs learning and outreach programmes for schools, families and adults. Public talks, workshops and events support engagement with artists and themes represented in the galleries. The institution often works with regional and national partners to present touring exhibitions and special commissions.

As a focal point for contemporary art in the West Midlands, the New Art Gallery Walsall plays a role in local cultural life and wider artistic networks.
