Overview

Sylvie Faucheux (born 29 May 1960) is a French academic and public figure known for combining scholarship in environmental economics with university leadership and civic engagement. She was born in the 20th arrondissement of Paris and has worked as a professor and as a politician in France. Her principal scholarly interests are economics of the natural environment and practical approaches to sustainable development.

Academic career and institutional leadership

Faucheux trained at Paris 1 Panthéon‑Sorbonne and went on to found a research centre in 1995 that brought together economists, ethicists and environmental specialists. That unit—often described with terms such as the Center for Economics and ethics of the environment—later became a joint research structure with national development research bodies. She served as President of the Université de Versailles Saint‑Quentin‑en‑Yvelines (UVSQ) from 2002 until April 2012, overseeing academic programmes, research strategy and institutional partnerships.

Research focus and activities

Faucheux’s work sits at the interface of economic analysis, public policy and environmental stewardship. Rather than pursuing narrow theoretical questions alone, her research emphasises applied tools and governance mechanisms that can reconcile economic activity with ecological limits. Common themes in her work include:

  • valuation of environmental goods and ecosystem services;
  • ethical dimensions of resource use and intergenerational equity;
  • institutional instruments for promoting sustainable development.

She has directed interdisciplinary teams, supervised graduate students and promoted partnerships between universities and public research institutions, including collaborative arrangements with development research agencies.

Public roles and political engagement

Beyond academia, Faucheux has taken part in public life. She stood as a Socialist Party candidate in the parliamentary elections of June 2007 for the first district of Yvelines. From 2002 she was also involved in national higher‑education governance, serving on boards concerned with research and higher education and coordinating working groups on sustainable development policy.

Honours and legacy

Faucheux’s contributions have been recognised by several national distinctions: she has been named Chevalier of academic and national orders and received awards that highlight her commitment to sustainability. Official mentions include the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and the Ordre national du Mérite; she is also listed among recipients of the Légion d'honneur. In 2009 she received the Marianne d'Or for actions favouring sustainable development. Her legacy is primarily institutional: strengthening environmental research within economics departments and promoting sustainable development as a cross‑cutting priority for universities.
