Club career

McCall began his senior career as a teenager with Bradford City, making his first-team debut in 1982 and becoming a regular at Valley Parade. During his first spell he helped the club win the Division Three title, a success that was overshadowed by the tragic stadium fire at Valley Parade in 1985. He left Bradford after several seasons to join Everton, where he featured in the side that reached the 1989 FA Cup Final.

In 1991 McCall moved north to join Rangers, the Glasgow club with which he enjoyed his most decorated period. While at Rangers he collected multiple Scottish league championships and domestic cups, contributing in midfield for seven seasons and helping the team dominate domestic competition in the 1990s.

Later playing years and retirement

McCall returned to Bradford City for a second spell, taking on the captaincy and playing a pivotal role in guiding the club to the top division of English football for the first time in many decades. He finished his playing career with a spell at Sheffield United, where he remained involved in the coaching setup and formally retired from playing in 2005.

International career

Although born in Leeds in England, McCall qualified to represent Scotland through his father and won 40 international caps. His international run concluded in the late 1990s after he was not selected for the 1998 World Cup squad.

Transitioning into coaching while still at Bradford, McCall served briefly as a caretaker player-manager in 2000. He later worked on the staff at Sheffield United and was assistant to manager Neil Warnock before returning to Bradford as first-team manager in 2007. After leaving Bradford in early 2010 he accepted the managerial position at Motherwell, competing in the Scottish Premiership and continuing his long association with the Scottish game.
