Physical characteristics

Borealopelta was a broad-bodied, low-slung herbivore protected by rows of osteoderms (bony plates) embedded in the skin. Estimates place its length at about 5.5 metres, with mass estimates commonly reported near the order of one to two tonnes. Distinctive features include:

  • Large, keeled osteoderms covering the back, neck and tail base.

Exceptional preservation and coloration

The specimen preserves osteoderms in life position with overlying soft tissue and impressions of the epidermis. Microscopic pigment-bearing structures interpreted as melanosomes were identified, leading researchers to reconstruct a countershaded pattern: darker on top and lighter below. Such evidence supports the idea that this animal used camouflage to reduce detection by predators. Details of the skin and pigment distribution make Borealopelta one of the best cases for studying prehistoric coloration in non-avian dinosaurs (melanin, epidermis).

Discovery and naming

The fossil was recovered from sedimentary deposits in Alberta, province of Canada, and prepared with care to reveal delicate external structures. The genus and species were named to reflect its northern (boreal) origin and to honor individuals involved in its preparation and study. Publication of the specimen attracted broad attention because of its state of preservation and the biological insights it provides.
