Early career and local service

Before state office, Estes worked in public finance and local government, serving in county-level fiscal roles that involved managing public funds and budgets. That local experience shaped his reputation as a fiscal manager and provided a base for his statewide campaign for treasurer. His background in public bookkeeping and fund oversight was frequently cited during his campaigns and tenure.

State Treasurer (2011–2017)

As Kansas State Treasurer, Estes administered the state's treasury functions, including cash management, investment of public funds, and custody of unclaimed property. The treasurer's office also promotes financial literacy and works to reunite citizens with lost assets. Estes was responsible for overseeing these programs and reporting on the state's fiscal position while working with the governor's office and the legislature.
